ZERO WASTEWATER DISCHARGE: Baja’s Coast to Benefit from New Plan

A new project has been raised by the local water company (CESPT) to remove 100% of a wastewater discharges to both the Tijuana River basin (affecting San Diego County) and the Pacific Ocean. The sum of $400M pesos is allocated to the project (almost $30M dollars) and the stated object is simply “ZERO DISCHARGE.” In a related project, CESPT has also been implementing a program called Proyecto Morado or the Purple Project which is using treated wastewater for beautification projects throughout the region. The main purpose was to modernize the region and deal squarely with limited water supplies exacerbated by the lining of the Colorado River by the US. (That river has been Baja’s primary source of water through underground aquifers leading to wells.) This project is a very welcome sign of progress along the Scenic Corridor of northern Baja and will certainly benefit our sensitive ocean... and probably let us enjoy it a little more when we actually get in the water.
